CHAPTER EIGHT
HE HADNâT INTENDED to join her, yet Kane found himself falling in step as they ran over the rough terrain together.
Heâd been following her for four miles so far, ever since his alarm had gone off half an hour earlier and heâd decided to see if a run would clear his head. At first heâd thought it better to stay back, off Mattieâs radar. But following that delectable body, clad in tight running gear that moulded itself to every delicious curve, had definitely not been helping to keep his libido in check.
At least running alongside her meant he couldnât stay just the right distance behind her, ogling her like some kind of hyped-up teenage boy. Itâd been altogether too tempting to pull her into the nearby treeline and take her up against one of those silver birches. All he could think of was the way her long legs had appeared even longer, reminding him of the way sheâd wrapped them around his hips that night at the hotel. Locking them over his back and using them to pull him deeper and deeper inside her.
God, he was losing it again.
Concentrating on his running, Kane willed his body back into submission. No easy feat when her ragged breathing was now causing a slightly different memory. The damned woman was enough to drive him insane.
And he wasnât even sure she knew it.
Mattie swung her head round, saw him running beside her and slowlyâreluctantly, he thoughtâpulled her earphones out of her ears.
âI thought youâd be in the gym.â
âIâve always preferred running.â He shrugged, then frowned. âWhy?â
âI donât know...the muscles.â
She flushed as she said it, the tell sheâd been trying to hide. The giveaway that sheâd paid him more attention than she wanted to admit toâthinking of him the way heâd been thinking of her. Kane barely supressed a grin.
âThatâs just genuine physical work,â he told her. âNo hours of weights in the gym.â
At least out here they were safe. Safe to talk in privacy, but also safe that it wasnât intimate. Nothing could happen.
âIf the offer is still on the table for the MERT ride-along, Iâd like to see that.â
âWhat changed your mind?â
He couldnât tell whether she was hacked off or happy about it and, for some reason, that got under his skin.
âI figured it could only help me to know what to focus on for my guys if I saw for myself how their packaging of the casualties affects your team.â
It was a valid reason, and one he certainly should have in the forefront of his mind. If was just a shame that the main reason started with Spending more time and ended on with Mattie.
Even the thought of her was helping to elevate his temperature, and as much as heâd like to blame it on the run, he couldnât. With an irritated grumble, Kane hauled off his running tee and tucked it into the rear waistband of his shorts.
âDo you really need to take that off?â
âSorry?â He turned to look at her, assuming that this was her idea of a joke, getting him back for earlier.
